Role Overview

We are looking for a Backend + Voice AI Engineer who can design, build, and scale core

backend systems, real-time APIs, and integrations with AI services. You will work directly

with the founders and play a key role in shaping Omli’s technology from the ground up.

What You’ll Do

Backend Engineering

●

Build and maintain production-grade backend services (Python preferred).

●

Design REST & WebSocket APIs used by companion devices and mobile apps.

●

Own data modeling and storage for conversations, analytics, and user data.

●

Implement robust monitoring, logging, alerting, and system health checks.

●

Set up and optimize infrastructure on AWS (compute, storage, networking,

deployments).

●

Collaborate closely with mobile and hardware teams to deliver seamless

experiences.

AI Integration

●

Evaluate and compare providers for accuracy, latency, and reliability.

●

Work on inference routing, fallback strategies, service orchestration, and cost

optimization.

●

Ensure all AI integrations follow privacy and safety requirements for kids.

Architecture & Systems

●

Participate in system design discussions: API contracts, scaling, caching, queues,

auth, etc.●

Design backend components for low-latency voice experiences (without touching

pipeline internals).

●

Setup and manage queues/event systems (Kafka/RabbitMQ/SQS/Redis Streams).

●

Define engineering standards: code quality, reliability, documentation, and testing.

You’d Be a Great Fit If You Have

Must-Haves

●

2–7 years of backend engineering experience (Python preferred; Node/Go/Rust a

plus).

●

Strong understanding of API design, distributed systems, and microservices.

●

Hands-on experience with cloud platforms—AWS preferred.

●

Experience with at least one database: MongoDB / Postgres / DynamoDB.

●

Solid knowledge of caching, queues, concurrency, and performance tuning.

●

Experience integrating external AI/ML APIs or similar high-availability services.

●

Strong debugging skills; you enjoy solving deep system-level issues.

●

Comfort working in a fast, iterative startup environment.

Nice-To-Haves

●

Experience with audio, speech, or real-time communication systems.

●

Exposure to consumer hardware (Raspberry Pi, IoT) or edge-device integration.

●

Knowledge of LLM-based architectures, embeddings, vector search, or prompt

engineering.

●

Interest in Rust for performance-heavy components.

●

Experience building products for children or in safety-critical domains.
