Power BI UI/UX Designer
Job Summary
The BI UI/UX Designer plays a crucial role in creating visually compelling and user-friendly dashboards and analytics experiences. The role focuses on translating complex data into meaningful insights, ensuring performance and accessibility while collaborating with stakeholders and engineering teams.
Responsibilities
- Conduct stakeholder interviews and workshops to identify user personas, key questions, and decision-making processes.
- Define Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and success metrics; structure the narrative and navigation model of each dashboard.
- Produce user flows, low-fidelity wireframes, and high-fidelity mockups using Figma prior to implementation.
- Develop brand-aligned themes and templates for Power BI, and establish a reusable design system for analytics.
- Implement best-fit visuals and interaction patterns in dashboards, optimizing for scan-ability and comprehension.
- Ensure designs meet WCAG 2.2 AA standards for accessibility, while setting performance guidelines to enhance user experience.
- Collaborate with Data Engineering to ensure dataset readiness, and provide clear specifications for measures in DAX where applicable.
- Lead design reviews with clients, quickly iterating based on feedback and providing necessary training materials to ensure user adoption.
- Maintain comprehensive design documentation to advocate for consistency across the analytics portfolio.
Qualifications
- 5-8+ years of experience designing Business Intelligence (BI) and analytics experiences, including at least 3 years focused on Power BI, with a strong portfolio.
- Expertise in information design, data storytelling, and fluency in Figma (components, variants, prototyping).
- Proven ability to create pixel-polished Power BI dashboards including themes, bookmarks, drill-throughs, and tooltips.
- Working knowledge of data modeling concepts (star schema) and DAX sufficient to specify or create common measures.
- Strong understanding of accessibility and usability principles; ability to balance aesthetic design with clarity and speed.
- Excellent communication skills with experience in conducting client-facing workshops and aligning stakeholder interests.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with Microsoft Fabric/OneLake, Deneb (Vega-Lite), or custom visuals, as well as mobile-optimized layouts.
- Familiarity with performance analysis tools (Performance Analyzer, DAX Studio) and best practices for metadata hygiene.
- Prior experience in enterprise branding and creating reusable Power BI templates/design systems for analytics.
Experience
- Minimum 5 years of experience in BI and analytics design, with specific focus on Power BI for at least 3 years.
