Role Overview
At Vidyut, we are building the future of EV financing in India. The Head of Risk will play a mission-critical role in designing and implementing scalable risk frameworks that power responsible growth. This role will be responsible for defining underwriting, monitoring portfolio health, and building data-backed policies for emerging EV asset classes, and innovative financing solutions like Battery-as-a-Service. The ideal candidate brings strong experience in risk strategy across vehicle finance, SME lending, or fintech.
- Department Objective:
- To ensure sustainable growth of our lending business by managing portfolio risk, designing effective underwriting frameworks, and creating early warning mechanisms.
- Area of Responsibility:
- New customer underwriting (especially thin-file and new-to-credit borrowers)
- Policy design for EV and used EV financing
- Portfolio performance tracking (DPD, vintage, PD, LGD, Loss curves)
- Risk model validation and refinement
- Partner / lender policy alignment
- Key Results / Outputs and Impact on Organizational Goal:
- Maintain net credit losses within target loss rate
- Reduce manual intervention in credit decisions by automating significant portions of the policy
- Achieve portfolio-level early delinquency trigger resolution
- Publish monthly risk dashboards for internal and external stakeholders
- Duties of the Role:
- Things Candidate is Expected to Do by Themselves:
- Design, test, and implement underwriting scorecards (e.g., bureau, alternate data, application score)
- Define risk appetite and exposure norms per customer segment
- Engage with lender partners to align policies and ensure portfolio buy-in
- Build credit monitoring systems and portfolio health dashboards
- Train internal teams on credit policies and risk indicators
- Things They Will Get Guidance / Support On:
- Engineering and data infra for tool development
- Legal frameworks and collections enforcement
- Coordination with product for LOS/LMS integration
- Lender engagement strategy from senior leadership
Required Skills & Competencies

- Technical Skills:
- Deep understanding of credit scorecards, PD/LGD/EAD models, and risk segmentation
- Proficiency in Excel, risk modeling tools (R, Python, or similar), and dashboards (e.g., Power BI, Metabase)
- Familiarity with credit bureau data, alternate data sources, and LOS integration
- Communication Skills:
- Prepare monthly credit committee decks and present to internal and external stakeholders
- Write and maintain credit policy documents
- Communicate risk insights clearly across cross-functional teams including sales, product, and finance
- Customer Backward thinking:
- Understand nuances of EV borrowers, especially thin-file and new-to-credit
- Design risk policies that balance customer inclusion and loss control
- Problem Solving:
- Ability to think creatively to underwrite unconventional assets or data-scarce customers
- Diagnose root causes for delinquencies and improve risk filters accordingly
- Ability to get things done:
- Execute fast with minimal supervision
- Balance short-term loan book growth with long-term portfolio health
- Work collaboratively across sales, product, and operations to implement risk solutions
- Strategic Thinking and Prioritization:
- Define 12-24 month risk evolution roadmap
- Align credit strategy with business expansion (e.g., new geographies, resale, battery leasing)
- Make data-backed calls on product-market-credit fit
- Leadership:
- Build the risk function and set the vision for the team
- Drive top to bottom alignment in the org on the risk strategy
Relevant Experiences
(Qualifications and experience required)
- 8-10 Years of Experience in risk function
- Preferred experience in EV financing, used vehicle finance, or digital lending; exposure to thin-file/NTC underwriting is a plus
- Bachelor’s in Engineering, Economics, Finance, or related field; MBA not mandatory; Advanced analytics courses or job experience is preferred.
Interview Process:
If shortlisted, candidates can expect the following rounds of interviews, that is a part of a structured interview process designed to assess skills, competencies, experience, and alignment with our values and culture. The process includes the following stages:
- Initial Screening: A brief introductory call with our recruiting team to discuss your background, the role, and your interest in joining our team.
- Hiring Manager Intro call: A meeting with the hiring manager to dive deeper into the role, expectations, and your qualifications.
If Hiring manager is ok to proceed with the candidate, then the following rounds:
- Round 1: Interview with second co-founder.
- Round 2: Interview with Credit Head
- Round 3 Team Fit and Culture Interview: HR round - an opportunity to learn more about the work environment and discuss alignment with our core values and culture.
Debrief meeting:
- Post an interview round panelists to submit written feedback on ATS portal in detail along with hiring decision (Hire/No Hire).
- After all rounds and all feedback received in writing, there will be a debrief meeting with all panelists + hiring manager.
- Final decision to be taken by hiring manager with a veto with the bar raiser on the candidate which bar raiser can exercise at their discretion.
