DBA [ Snowflake & SQL Server ]

Company Overview

Company details not specified.

Job Summary

We’re hiring a Senior Production DBA who excels at the intersection of precision and speed. This role involves owning Snowflake—our Massively Parallel Processing (MPP) backbone for Customer360, Article360, and all other master data & business data marts—along with our SQL Server farm consisting of 15–20 servers. The DBA will contribute to the operational data store that feeds a real-time API stack built with Java and Python. Responsibilities include tuning queries, preventing costly inefficiencies, ensuring high availability/disaster recovery (HA/DR), and maintaining smooth data flow across AWS and Microsoft ecosystems. Retail experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Snowflake Stewardship (MPP):

    • Operate and optimize warehouses, scaling policies, resource monitors, tasks/streams, and SnowPipe.
    • Enforce role-based access control (RBAC), data masking, row access policies, object tagging, and auditing.
    • Investigate and address query slowness using built-in tools such as QUERY_HISTORY, WAREHOUSE_LOAD_HISTORY, GET_QUERY_OPERATOR_STATS, and profile views.
    • Implement strategies to reduce costs and latency via clustering, micro-partition awareness, result cache strategy, and appropriate workload isolation.
  • SQL Server ODS (15–20 servers):

    • Manage high availability/disaster recovery (HA/DR) using Always On Availability Groups (AGs), and enforce backup/restore strategies including full, differential, and log backups.
    • Troubleshoot issues using Query Store, Extended Events, and Dynamic Management Views (DMVs).
    • Design database solutions for real-time API read patterns including connection pooling, read replicas, and hot indexing.
  • Performance Engineering & Firefighting:

    • Address long-running queries, eliminating inefficiencies and optimizing resource use.
    • Collaborate with Data Engineering to pre-aggregate or materialize heavy joins; document and codify repeatable fix patterns.
  • Streaming & Change Data Capture:

    • Enable low-latency data flows through SQL Server change tracking and ingestion to Snowflake.
    • Validate end-to-end data freshness and meet API-facing service level agreements (SLAs).
  • Observability & Incident Response:

    • Build dashboards and alerts using tools such as CloudWatch, Azure Monitor, or Datadog to monitor system health.
    • Participate in on-call rotations and conduct blameless postmortems to track issue remediation.
  • Security, Compliance, and Governance:

    • Implement security measures such as least privilege access, encryption, and audit trails.
    • Collaborate with security teams on SOX/PII safeguards and data retention strategies.
  • Automation & DevOps:

    • Utilize Infrastructure-as-Code principles for database objects and configurations; implement CI/CD for schema changes.
    • Script routine processes using PowerShell, Python, or Bash; create self-service runbooks for common operational tasks.
  • Capacity & Cost Management:

    • Forecast growth and manage sizing and licensing for database resources; propose optimization strategies.
  • Retail Analytics Partnership:

    • Work with BI/Analytics teams to design efficient SQL queries aligned with retail performance indicators.

Qualifications

  • Experience: 7 to 10 years in database administration with a focus on snowflake and SQL server technologies.

  • Technical Skills:

    • Proficiency in Snowflake and SQL Server Database Management Systems.
    • Strong understanding of High Availability/Disaster Recovery strategies and real-time data processing.
    • Experience with Performance Tuning and Query Optimization.
    • Familiarity with Infrastructure-as-Code tools (Terraform/CloudFormation).
    • Knowledge of CI/CD principles and practices.
    • Skilled in using monitoring tools (CloudWatch, Azure Monitor, Datadog).
    • Familiar with changes data capture methodologies.
  • Soft Skills:

    • Ability to remain calm and decisive under pressure.
    • Strong problem-solving skills and a systems-oriented mindset.
    • Excellent communication and documentation skills; proactive knowledge sharing.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with retail analytics and related KPIs.
  • Familiarity with AI technologies and data reliability frameworks.

Experience

  • Minimum of 7 to 10 years of relevant experience in database administration and performance tuning in production environments.
