Senior Design Engineer - BMS Hardware

Job Summary

As a Senior Design Engineer, you will be responsible for developing Battery Management System (BMS) hardware for the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) domain. This role requires you to use state-of-the-art design techniques while adhering to compliance and electromagnetic interference (EMI) and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards. You will lead the delivery of modules and systems to ensure they meet quality standards and are delivered on time.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and design BMS hardware systems for the BESS domain.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and safety standards for energy storage applications.
  • Take ownership of modules/systems, ensuring timely and quality delivery.
  • Apply hands-on experience in power electronics concepts to create efficient driver and switching circuits.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) on hardware design.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to validate hardware designs and conduct board bring-up activities.

Qualifications

  • Educational Qualification: BE/BTech/MTech in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE).
  • Experience: 8 - 10 years in related fields.

Mandatory Skills

  1. Demonstrated experience developing BMS for energy storage/Energy Storage Systems (ESS).
  2. Rich hands-on experience in power electronics concepts, including driver circuits, switching circuits, converter topologies, and power converters.
  3. Knowledge of clearance and creepage, and isolation techniques required for hardware design.
  4. Strong design knowledge of digital and analog circuit design, including ADCs, DACs, operational amplifiers, microprocessors, microcontrollers, and Digital Signal Processors (DSPs).
  5. Familiarity with regulatory requirements for lithium-ion batteries such as UL9540, UL1973, IEC62619, IEC60730.
  6. Knowledge of PCB layout constraints and design guidelines.
  7. Experience with analog front-end circuit design specifically for lithium-ion batteries.
  8. Proficiency in simulation tools (e.g., P-Spice, Matlab, Mathcad).
  9. Experience with FMEA, root cause analysis, and Worst Case Circuit Analysis (WCCA).
  10. Work experience with various sensing methods (temperature, voltage, current sensing).
  11. Strong foundation in hardware peripherals and communication circuit design.
  12. Expertise in power supply design and MOSFET driving.
  13. Experience in hardware board bring-up activities and validations.
  14. Knowledge of PCB fabrication and assembly processes.

Preferred Skills

  1. Familiarity with Altium tool for schematics and layout design.
  2. Understanding of safety regulatory standards such as IEC-61508 and ISO-26262 in hardware design.
  3. Knowledge of contactors and relays.
  4. Working knowledge of safety-critical features including charge control, thermal control, fault detection, and diagnostics for battery and energy products.

Experience

  • 8 - 10 years of relevant experience required.
