Job Summary

The Senior Engineering Manager will lead the Internal Developer Platforms (IDP) team, focusing on the vision, implementation, and continuous improvement of internal platforms. This role is crucial in empowering engineering teams to build, deploy, and operate software efficiently at scale. The individual will embody effective leadership through a blend of technical expertise and people management, fostering a collaborative and growth-oriented engineering culture.

Responsibilities

  • Team Guidance & Development: Support and grow a team of engineers focused on internal developer tools and automation. Encourage collaboration, ownership, continuous learning, and conduct regular check-ins and career development conversations.
  • Technical Direction: Guide architectural decisions and provide hands-on support for scalable internal platforms including continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines, developer portals, infrastructure automation, service discovery, and monitoring tools.
  • Platform Strategy & Collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Engineering, Product, Security, Operations) to define and prioritize platform capabilities that enhance developer workflows and improve platform reliability.
  • Process & Culture Building: Promote best practices in software engineering, DevOps, and agile methodologies. Utilize metrics and feedback to measure platform adoption, performance, and developer satisfaction.
  • Innovation & Evolution: Stay informed about industry trends and emerging technologies to evolve platform capabilities and tooling to meet the engineering team’s current and future needs.

Qualifications

  • Experience: Extensive background in software engineering (typically 14+ years), including at least 3 years in a leadership role managing platform or infrastructure teams.
  • Technical Skills: Strong foundation in internal developer platforms, CI/CD systems, cloud infrastructure (Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Microsoft Azure), container orchestration (Kubernetes), infrastructure as code (Terraform, Ansible), and developer tooling.
  • Leadership Abilities: Proven ability to support and grow high-performing teams, with effective communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Problem Solving: Demonstrated experience in solving complex technical issues and improving developer workflows at scale.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Experience collaborating with product managers, security, and operations teams to deliver impactful platform solutions.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in large-scale Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) or enterprise environments.
  • Understanding of microservices architecture and service mesh.
  • Familiarity with site reliability engineering (SRE) practices.
  • Interest in improving the developer experience and fostering internal community building.

Experience

Typically requires a minimum of 14 years in software engineering, with at least 3 years in a leadership capacity.
