Backend Engineer

Job Summary

As a Backend Engineer, you will be responsible for building the systems that power our industrial AI products. This includes developing high-throughput services that handle real-time data ingestion from factory floors, implementing computer vision and process-optimization models at scale, and returning decisions to plant operations within seconds. This role emphasizes hands-on engineering, where you’ll be writing production Java code that runs continuously in some of the world's largest plants.

Responsibilities

• Design and build backend services using Java and Spring Boot to create clean, testable, and production-ready code operating at scale.
• Own the development of multi-threaded and concurrent workflows for real-time data ingestion, event processing, and low-latency inference pipelines.
• Design and ship REST APIs for frontend, mobile applications, and integration partners, ensuring a strong focus on versioning, error handling, and documentation.
• Model and query data in both relational (Postgres/MySQL) and NoSQL databases, writing efficient queries and designing schemas for durable performance.
• Integrate with Machine Learning (ML) services and streaming systems (e.g., Kafka, message queues) to provide real-time model outputs to plant operators.
• Debug and resolve production issues in live customer deployments by tracing problems, deploying fixes, and preventing recurrence.
• Contribute to system design conversations, participating actively in architecture decisions beyond just completing tasks.
• Write and review tests, including unit and integration tests, while conducting thoughtful code reviews for teammates, prioritizing engineering best practices.

Qualifications

• 2–5 years of hands-on backend engineering experience.
• Proficient in Java (Java 11+) and Spring Boot, with strong understanding of their ecosystems.
• Experience with multithreading and concurrency, including concepts such as thread pools, executors, race conditions, and locks.
• Comfortable working with SQL and relational databases, with a preference for Postgres or MySQL.
• Fundamental knowledge of REST API design; familiarity with Git and modern development workflows.
• Strong foundation in data structures and algorithms, with the ability to analyze time and space complexities.
• Demonstrated ownership mindset and willingness to ship, learn, and iterate.

Preferred Skills

• Familiarity with Kafka or RabbitMQ, alongside experience with streaming/messaging systems for high-throughput event pipelines.
• Knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, or hands-on experience with cloud services like AWS, GCP, or Azure.
• Experience building or maintaining services within a microservices architecture.
• Understanding of Redis, caching strategies, or performance optimization techniques.
• Exposure to ML model serving and experience working alongside data science and computer vision teams.
• Contributions to open-source projects or a public portfolio of work available for review.

Experience

• Minimum of 2–5 years of relevant backend engineering experience.
