Data Discovery & Classification Engineer

Job Summary

The Data Discovery & Classification Engineer is responsible for identifying, cataloging, and classifying enterprise data assets to ensure data governance, compliance, and security. This role plays a critical part in supporting the organization’s data management framework by implementing and optimizing data discovery tools and developing classification methodologies. The engineer collaborates closely with cross-functional teams to protect sensitive information and enhance data visibility across the organization.

Responsibilities

• Implement, maintain, and optimize data discovery and classification tools and processes.
• Identify and catalog structured and unstructured data assets across various platforms.
• Develop, refine, and apply data classification policies to ensure regulatory compliance and data security.
• Collaborate with IT, security, and business teams to ensure data governance best practices are followed.
• Monitor and report on the effectiveness of data discovery and classification activities.
• Provide technical expertise and support for data audits, risk assessments, and incident response related to data classification.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, or a related field.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in data discovery and classification engineering or a similar role.
• Strong understanding of data governance, data security, and compliance requirements.
• Proficiency with data discovery and classification tools and technologies.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and documentation skills.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
• Experience in managing structured and unstructured data in enterprise environments.
• Certifications such as Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP), or equivalent are preferred.

Preferred Skills

• Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and their data discovery/classification services.
• Experience with data loss prevention (DLP) technologies.
• Knowledge of industry regulations such as GDPR, HIPAA, or CCPA.
• Experience with scripting languages such as Python or PowerShell for data automation tasks.

Experience

• Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in data discovery, classification engineering, or closely related fields.
• Prior experience with large-scale enterprise data environments is highly desirable.

Salary

• Estimated salary range: ₹600,000 – ₹1,300,000 per annum.
